I’ve been playing guitar since 1985 and teaching for more than 30 years. Music has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember, and teaching it has become just as meaningful to me as playing it.
I studied music theory and composition at the University of Washington and spent years studying jazz, blues, and rock guitar privately with nationally recognized players. That formal training gave me a deep understanding of how music works. Decades of performing and teaching showed me how to make that knowledge practical and accessible for real students.
Over time, teaching became more than a way to share what I know. It became a craft I’ve deliberately refined.
My Approach to Teaching
Musicianship is built step by step on a strong foundation. Technique, theory, reading, ear training, repertoire, and expression all support each other. When those pieces are introduced in the right order, students progress steadily and avoid the frustration that causes so many players to quit.
I don’t believe in random lessons or one-size-fits-all programs. Every student has different goals. Some want to play their favorite songs. Some want to join a school jazz band. Some want to improvise. Some are adult beginners finally returning to an instrument they’ve always wanted to learn.
My job is to know what comes next, and why.
I design each lesson so that skills and songs reinforce each other, building momentum instead of confusion. Over time, students don’t just learn material. They develop independence and the ability to guide their own growth.
Why Work With a Private Instructor?
In today’s world, there are endless videos and tutorials online. Those resources can be helpful, and I often encourage students to use them as supplements.
What they can’t provide is structure, sequencing, feedback, and accountability.
A private lesson means:
• Immediate correction so you don’t reinforce bad habits
• Personalized pacing based on your goals
• Clear weekly direction on what to practice
• Accountability that keeps momentum strong
• An experienced guide who knows how skills connect
Beginners and intermediate players especially benefit from having someone who can see the bigger picture and steer them in the right direction.
Who I Work With
I primarily work with:
• Children and teens building strong fundamentals
• Adult beginners who want a clear, supportive path
• Intermediate players ready to break through plateaus
Many of my students stay for years and develop the confidence and skill to explore music independently.
My goal isn’t just to help you play songs. It’s to help you become a musician.
A Personal Note
After decades of playing and teaching, I’ve come to value the long-term growth of my students more than anything else. I care deeply about teaching well. I continually refine my materials, sequencing, and approach so lessons remain clear, efficient, and effective.
If you’re looking for structured guidance, steady progress, and a supportive learning environment, I’d be glad to work with you.
